Two people have been charged with assaulting a police officer following a joy ride on a stolen motorcycle in Brisbane’s south.
An Upper Mount Gravatt Highway Patrol officer was alerted to two people on an allegedly stolen Yamaha motorcycle travelling on the wrong side of the Logan road about 8pm on Tuesday.
South Brisbane District Inspector Stephen Gough said dangerous driving offences of this nature have an increased likelihood of a serious, potentially fatal, accident.
“There is zero excuse for unsafe driving behaviours. Not only do acts of this nature put the driver at risk, but they are also risking the lives of every other road user who crosses their path,” he said.
Queensland Police released footage of the highway arrest, where a Patrol Officer can be seen in a struggle with the rider of the motorcycle.
The 42-year-old Wishart man attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by police and arrested.
Both the rider and his passenger, a 31-year-old Upper Mount Gravatt woman, were arrested and put into the back of a police wagon.
The Wishart man was charged with five counts of serious assault police officer, two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, and possessing property suspected of having been used.
The man had also been issued with traffic infringement notices for driving uninsured motor vehicle ($645 fine) and possess something that resembles a number plate ($387 fine).
The man was scheduled to appear before Brisbanes Magistrates court today.
The passenger has been charged with one count of serious assault police officer and is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 8.
Insp Gough said highway patrol officers are working hard every day conducting proactive patrols and road enforcement activities to detect and prevent dangerous driving behaviours.
Fifteen lives have been lost on roads in Brisbane’s south in 2025. Which is six more lives lost than at the same time last year.
