BRISBANE’S luxury Emporium Hotel South Bank is working with health authorities following the shock revelation that Hollywood star Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson have coronavirus.

Wilson, a singer-songwriter, performed at the multimillion-dollar Grey St property on March 5, and the couple has since been to Sydney – where Wilson sang at the Opera House and appeared on TV – and the Gold Coast, where Hanks is filming Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic.

When Wilson performed in the Emporium’s ballroom last week, Hanks sat quietly at the back, with the couple’s son Truman, and security guards close by.

General manager Charles Martin said the hotel was looking into whether further action was necessary to keep guests, residents and staff safe.

Mr Martin said there had been cleaning and sanitisation of the room in which Wilson performed, as well as any associated areas the couple visited, as part of normal hotel procedures.

“Following today’s announcement, we have taken active steps to brief our staff on this matter, and extra hygiene precautions were already in place since the first international outbreak of coronavirus in January,” he said.

This included regularly wiping and disinfecting door handles, lift buttons, handrails and bathrooms, and extra hand sanitisers were placed around the venue.

It is understood that Michael Chugg Entertainment (which represents Wilson) is also being consulted on any further steps.

Hanks, who is on the Gold Coast in pre-production for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, first landed in the Sunshine State on January 26.

Coincidentally, he was rumoured to be staying at Peppers Broadbeach, where the state’s first coronavirus case — a Chinese national — was detected two days later.

He was spotted enjoying Gold Coast beaches and restaurants before heading home to the States on February 6 for the Oscars, for which he was nominated for best supporting actor for his role in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.

Hanks, 63, wasn’t spotted in Queensland again until February 29, when he charmed locals on the beach.

After Wilson’s gig at the Emporium the couple travelled to Sydney, where Wilson also performed at the Opera House and on the Today show.

They looked in good spirits on March 6 where they were seen in their active wear walking hand-in-hand around Bondi the day before her show.

Hanks surprised fans today when he posted a picture of a glove (a trademark photo he regularly posts throughout his travels) in a hospital bin while confirming he and Wilson tested positive.

The Australian Government Department of Health is regularly updating its isolation advice, and Emporium staff are following this advice and asking guests to do the same.

If you begin to feel unwell and develop a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or a respiratory illness you should seek immediate medical attention.
