More than 100,000 jobs, some potentially paying thousands of dollars, are up for grabs until election day on May 21.

Evan Ekin-Smith from the Australian Electoral Commission said no qualifications were required for most of the roles, which were mostly at polling booths up to and including polling day, as training was provided.

“In total, 105,000 people are needed across the nation, when we become of the country’s largest employer’s for a short time,” he said.

“People can earn anything from a few hundred dollars to possibly a few thousand, depending on their seniority level and how long they’re working for us.”

With 7000 voting venues across Australia, Mr Ekin-Smith said people were needed for the politically neutral jobs such as guarding ballot boxes, marking voters off the electoral roll, queue controllers and, this year, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, hygiene officers.

The AEC spokesman said the recruitment for temporary election staff was going well with some positions still available throughout Queensland.

“With approximately 105,000 staffing positions we’ve had more than 200,000 people who’ve registered their interest (nationwide) which is fantastic,” he said.

The pay for the temporary roles ranged from $25.54 to $48.29 per hour, depending on the job.

Some positions were also available at early or outpost voting centres, mobile polling booths, and after Election Day to help count votes, manage election materials and complete a range of administration tasks, according to the AEC website.

The web site also states applicants must wear masks and be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to be eligible, though medical exemptions may apply for some roles.

They also must be an Australian citizen
