It’s a chilly start to the Queensland school term, with parts of the Darling Downs, Wide Bay and southeast plunging below zero on Monday morning.

Gatton shivered through its coldest morning of the year, dropping to 0.9C, around 5C below average.

Brisbane, Oakey, Amberley and Beaudesert also recorded their coldest mornings since mid-June.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said the below average temperatures were driven by a trough and a cold front passing south over New South Wales, with fresh westerly winds extending across southeast Queensland.

Dalby fell to -1.5C, with the apparent temperature hitting -4.3C at its coldest point around 4am.
