A protracted battle by LNP Senator Gerard Rennick to save his political career with the party has come to an unsuccessful end.

The LNP’s state council, in a closed-door meeting on Friday, made a decision that cemented a 2023 ballot which dumped Senator Rennick from the party’s ticket.

Then-LNP treasurer Stuart Fraser beat the first-term senator by three votes, replacing Senator Rennick as number three on the senate ticket.

Senator Rennick alleged there had been “irregularities” with how the ballot was run, including federal Liberal leader Peter Dutton being denied a proxy or representative vote.

The maverick senator lodged an appeal with the party’s governing body, but was rejected by the executive as he had run out of time.

The fight was escalated to the Supreme Court, where Judge Glenn Martin in June, ruled senator Rennick had lodged legal action too late and ordered he pay the LNP’s costs.

The closed-door LNP state council meeting is understood to have upheld the Supreme Court’s decision.

This means Senator Rennick’s battle has come to an end.

His senate term will expire in June 2025.

Senator Rennick declined to comment, stating the vote was an internal party matter.
