Seal spotted at Newport, Redcliffe

A seal has been spotted in the waterway of an affluent suburb north of Brisbane.

A seal has been spotted in the waterway of an affluent suburb north of Brisbane.

The seal was seen by staff of boat and jet ski training company iLicence as they were heading out for licensing. They shared footage of the seal near the pontoon of a waterfront home at Newport, near Redcliffe.

“We had a little friend whilst licensing today! It’s pretty rare to see a Seal in Newport QLD! So cute!” the social media post read from Friday.

Seals are occasionally seen in Queensland waters, particularly during the cooler months of the year.

Seal species that can be spotted in Queensland include the Subantarctic fur seal, New Zealand fur seal, Australian fur seal, and Leopard seal.

Several people commented on the post, with some saying they see a seal around this time of the year in the area, while others commented on what looked like shark attack wounds on the seal in the footage. It’s understood Sea World retrieved the seal on Friday.

In recent years, occasional seal sightings have been reported in the waters of Moreton Bay, as well as the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

In 2023, a young long-nosed seal caused a stir when it became trapped in Lake Orr at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.

The juvenile seal survived in the lake, which is full of bull sharks and 15km away from the nearest ocean entrance, for several weeks before being rescued and returned to the ocean by staff from Sea World.

In 2018, a juvenile seal was spotted resting on the foreshore near Settlement Cove Lagoon at Redcliffe.

Under the Nature Conservation Act, people must not get within 40 metres of a seal when it is on land.

There are penalties for people who approach seals on land including a fine of up to $17,250.

If you believe the seal is sick or injured, call the DES Hotline 1300 130 372 for assistance.
