Fish and chips. A simple concept but a big subject. There’s no shortage of fryers bubbling the batter across Brisbane and beyond.
Here are five worth catching:
The Fish Factory, Morningside
Setting the standard for seafood market-cum-fish and chippery, The Fish Factory in Morningside has proven itself a firm favourite for everyone from local families to chefs to visiting celebrities. As one of the leading wholesalers of fresh seafood to some of the state’s top restaurants (we see you, Rick Shores), you can put your faith in some top-quality bites, choosing to dine-in at the bistro, takeaway or even enjoy a taste of ultra-fresh sushi and sashimi at the sushi bar. Now, don’t get us wrong, the bougiest options here are just as worth it as the most quintessentially-Aussie deep-fried dishes, but there is something about macking on a perfectly crisp bit of crumbed snapper and knowing exactly where it came from.

Costa’s Seafood Cafe
Voted numerous times as the nation’s best fish and chips as part of the Seafood Industry Australia’s Great Australian Fish and Chip awards, Costa’s Seafood Cafe in Capalaba is everything you could ask for in a takeaway joint. Retro fish-and-chippery faves like the battered sav and chiko roll sit happily alongside hero dishes like flash-fried squid and crumbed Tasmanian oysters, on a menu that is served in true cafe-style for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With over 30 years of fish-fuelled expertise, the family operators behind the cafe seem to have perfected the art of nostalgic takeaway, paired perfectly with their fresh-caught seafood market on-site.

Manly Boathouse Fish and Chippery, Manly
There is truly nothing better on a summer’s day than staking the perfect oceanside view, armed with piping-hot, chicken-salt laden fish and chips, but some Brisbanites would have you believe that you have to venture to the Gold or Sunshine Coast’s to even get a glimpse. Wrong. Just a stones throw out of the city lies some stunning beaches, and perched upon one, with sparkling views of Moreton Bay, is the Manly Boathouse Fish and Chippery. Taking seaside-vibes to the max, the venue here is dishing out an, admittedly limited, range of to-die-for fish and chips and seafood; best enjoyed under the navy and white shade of the patio picnic tables with a glass of white in hand.
4 Trafalgar St Manly
Clayfield Seafood Markets, Clayfield
They are the unassuming Brisbane northside fishmonger boasting nothing but the freshest locally-caught seafood, but Clayfield Seafood Markets has also won countless awards for their standout fish and chip offerings. With house-made Newstead Brewing Co. Ale batter, and a whale of a menu teeming with options for every taste and diet, Clayfield Seafood Markets has proved they don’t have to be seaside to be some of the best in the biz. They are known far and wide for their gluten-free options (prepped and cooked with dedicated equipment) and those on the hunt for a little lighter can expect to be pleasantly surprised with the huge salad and ‘nippers’ menu choices.

Miami Fish Market, Miami
Helmed by Paul Gloftis, younger brother to Simon (Hellenika, SK), and wife Fallon, Miami Fish Market is the Gold Coast’s bougiest fish and chip joint. If you’ve ever dared look down on the humble potato scallop, the $80, caviar-topped option here might be more up your alley. While you can certainly enjoy a classic (and delicious!) fish-and-chip feed drawn from some Gloftis family favourites, you might feel more at home dining on their kombu glazed Patagonian toothfish instead. For those looking for an even lighter, brighter experience, the market is also home to a fresh sashimi and oyster bar, leaving not a single taste, or budget, unsatisfied.
