Two Gold Coast high school students have been taken to hospital after reportedly ingesting mushroom gummies.

Paramedics were called to Palm Beach-Currumbin State High on the southern Gold Coast just after 1.30pm on Wednesday after two male students aged in their late teens became ill.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the pair were experiencing symptoms including altered consciousness, dizziness and nausea.

One was taken to Tugun Satellite Hospital and later transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital while the other was taken directly by ambulance to GCUH.

The two teens were reported to have taken a product called Uncle Frog’s Mushroom Gummies which has been the subject of a national recall and urgent health warnings.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand issued a recall notice for the gummies in June after people across Australia were taken to hospital with symptoms including “disturbing hallucinations”.

Queensland’s chief health officer Dr John Gerrard was among health officials to issue warnings about the product after three people were hospitalised in the sunshine state.

The Australian distributor for the gummies later issued an apology, saying he was “really sorry” and making people sick was “not the intention”.
