Mystery over LNP candidate Chris Green’s exit as Kyle McMillen revealed as new challenger for Brisbane seat of Oxley

The LNP remains tight-lipped over why its former candidate for a safe Labor-held Brisbane seat quit, and why it quietly removed him from all of the party’s federal election branding, as his replacement is unveiled.

The Queensland LNP has formally revealed its pick for the safe seat of Oxley, but has yet to shed light on what prompted the former candidate to quit the role and the party altogether after months of heavy campaigning.

The LNP, in a statement complete with photos, confirmed veteran Kyle McMillen had been selected as the candidate for the safe Labor-held seat of Oxley.

It comes more than 24 hours after it was revealed the LNP’s former candidate Chris Green, had been quietly removed from all of the party’s federal election branding, websites, and social media feeds.

Efforts to reach Mr Green have so far been unsuccessful.

It is unclear why Mr Green felt aggrieved enough to quit the party altogether.

The LNP, in its statement, confirmed Mr Green had left the party.

Mr McMillen will stand as the candidate for Oxley just weeks after failing to win over branch members in the do-over preselection for the seat of Lilley.

The original LNP candidate for Lilley left the role due to mental health reasons, announcing the move on social media at the time.

Mr McMillen, after leaving the army in 2019, now works in the “local defence industry with Rheinmetall Defence Australia in the Oxley suburb of Redbank, specialising in workplace health and safety and as a veteran’s diversity and inclusion specialist”.

“As a veteran’s inclusion specialist, I understand how important it is for people of all ages to have the opportunity of secure, long-term employment. That’s why I’ll be campaigning to continue delivering the LNP’s local economic plan to support small businesses and create more local jobs,” he said.

Oxley is held by Labor’s Milton Dick with a margin of 6.4 per cent.
