The Copper Smelter at Mount Isa Mines has been closed after a worker was left in a critical condition and a second badly hurt after a horror work-place accident.

Multiple Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic crews responded to the incident at the Glencore Australia-owned and operated industrial facility in the Outback town at 4.19pm on Thursday.

QAS confirmed that one of the workers was in a critical condition and a second was in a stable, both with “significant burns”.

Initial reports from the scene were that two people had suffered burn injuries to the upper body, including to the face.

The incident is understood to have occurred above ground.

Mount Isa Mines confirmed that two workers were injured at its Copper Smelter.

A spokeswoman confirmed that the workers had been transferred to Mount Isa Base Hospital.

“Copper Smelter operations are currently suspended and we are currently investigating the incident with the relevant authorities,” she said.

“The health and safety of our workforce remain the highest priority.”
