Queensland’s home of tennis will undergo significant expansion ahead of 2032, with more than three hectares of land unlocked to transform the centre into a residential sporting precinct fit for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The state government is expected to on Thursday announce the 2.3 hectare expansion for the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson, on the boarder of neighbouring suburb Yeerongpilly, as part of its 2032 delivery plan.

Another hectare will be released to the market for housing and other mixed-use developments across two neighbouring Yeerongpilly land parcels.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said unlocking housing opportunity would create lasting legacy post 2032.

“They (Labor) talked about the Games for over 1000 days without a real plan, but the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job and delivering outcomes Queenslanders can see,” he said.

Mr Bleijie said housing lot approvals “slumped” by 29 per cent under the former Labor government.

He blamed Labor for record-low rental vacancy rates and Queensland’s growing social housing waitlist.

Since the LNP formed government in October 2024, the social housing waitlist has jumped from 47,820 to a record high of 56,000 people.

The government has pledged to delivery 2,000 community houses per year.

“The Crisafulli government is delivering for 2032 by building the venues we need and by making sure every investment leaves a lasting legacy for Queenslanders long after the Games are over,” Mr Bleijie said.

“We’re not just preparing for a two-week event – our focus is on lasting community benefit, from more housing to world-class sporting infrastructure.

“Queenslanders deserve venues, homes, and public spaces that will serve their communities well beyond the final medal ceremony.”

The Queensland Tennis Centre is currently home to the Brisbane International, the National Tennis Academy and various international competitions.

The centre will be upgraded ahead of the 2032 Games, receiving a new 3,000 seat roofed arena and an additional 12 courts that meet International Tennis Federation standards.
