Kara Jane Weribone has been identified as the woman killed in a horrific daylight shooting in North Toowoomba.
Emergency services, including dozens of police units were called to an address in Christmas Street about 1.50pm on Wednesday.
They arrived to find Ms Weribone in a critical condition and she was rushed to Toowoomba Hospital.
Sadly, she could not be saved and her death is now the subject of a homicide investigation.
Police locked down Christmas Street and part of West Street for most of Wednesday afternoon as they canvassed the area.
The incident occurred a short distance from Holy Name Catholic Primary School.
One Christmas Street resident described hearing a single gunshot followed by a man screaming.
“Just full on screaming,” she said.
“They fired a shot and drove off in a white Camry.”
Police have released images of the car, along with an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
“In less than a minute there were police everywhere, ambulances everywhere,” the woman said.
“We were still outside while the police took our details, then the police searched our backyard.
“No one was allowed to go or come in, it was very serious.”
Her neighbour heard the same shot and rushed out to help.
“The shot shook the house, I thought it was probably a car accident,” she said.
“A white Camry had pulled up, people were yelling and screaming, someone called the police while I grabbed some towels and took them out.”
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Darling Downs Acting-Detective Inspector Brian Collins said police were working to identify and locate the shooter.
“At this point in time investigations are still in the early stages and we are looking for witnesses from the community that may have been in and around the West Street, Christmas Street area yesterday afternoon between 1.30pm and 2pm,” he said.
“Further to that, we’re also looking for witnesses specifically in relation to those who may have seen a white Toyota Camry sedan in the area at that time and also may have seen that vehicle in and around the Gladstone Street area, specifically around 12 Gladstone Street in that area on the afternoon between 2pm and 3pm.”
It was initial reported that this vehicle was not relevant to the investigation, but police have seized the Camry and it is the subject of a forensic examination.
“We believe it may have links to the shooting,” A/Insp Collins said.
The shooter and the weapon remain unaccounted for.
“We did speak with three people from the scene yesterday afternoon,” A/Insp Collins said.
“They are not in police custody and they are assisting police as witnesses in relation to this matter.
“We have not seized any weapons.”
“We believe that there is no intermittent risk to any member within the community.
“We are confident that it was not a random attack however at this point in time we were still trying to investigate exactly what occurred.”
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident, including dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
