Brisbane Golf Club pro shop destroyed by fire

The pro shop at Brisbane Golf Club in Yeerongpilly has been destroyed in a ferocious blaze overnight.

The fire started about 8.30pm at Tennyson Memorial Ave club, with nine fire crews responding.

There were initial fears the historic clubhouse had been lost, but firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the pro shop and an adjoining buggy shed.

It was extinguished by 2am.

Local residents have spoken of the “muffled explosions” they heard late into the night while a member said he was the thankful the historic club house had been saved.

It is understood the fire is not suspicious, with suggestions it could have been started by an electric battery.

No one was inside the burning building at the time, with all occupants accounted for and a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics were on standby.

During the blaze, a police spokeswoman said Tennyson Memorial Ave was closed from near Walker St at the western side of the course to the Fairfield Rd overpass.

Diversions were in place and police urged motorists to avoid the area.

Shocked residents who could see the fire said it appeared the historic clubhouse, built in 1910, at Queensland’s first formal golf club had been completely destroyed.
