THE unpredictability of policing in the Northern Territory means the job can be an extremely difficult task, especially when challenging situations arise.
Assistant Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker has spent the past 20 years testing his own limits and occasionally putting his life on the line to serve and protect our community.
He has also participated in a number of internal and external community-related activities, including the recent Police Legacy Dinner, which raises money for families who have lost loved ones who were members of the police service.
He has now been nominated for a Pride of Australia Medal in the Community Spirit category for his ongoing dedication to both policing and Territorians. “Honestly, I am quite surprised,” Assistant Commissioner Chalker said.
“It’s always nice to have something like that come up unexpectedly, especially when you are doing something that you love to do.”
Having spent time in varying regions throughout the Northern Territory, including Darwin, Alice Springs and other remote areas, Assistant Commissioner Chalker has seen it all. But, he said, it’s not all bad.
“The best thing about the job is the challenges and day-to-day elements,” he said.
“We start each shift -– whether it’s morning, afternoon or night – not knowing what we will face and sometimes you get to do some very rewarding things.”
There are 10 awards up for grabs in this year’s Pride of Australia Medal 2014: the Outstanding Bravery Medal, Courage Medal, Heroism Medal, Community Spirit Medal, Child of Courage Medal, Young Leader Medal, Care and Compassion Medal, Inspiration Medal, Environment Medal and Fair Go Medal.
