Where to vote early in the Northern Territory

Territorians unable to attend a polling place on election day can cast their vote from Tuesday, while the electoral commission takes to the seas and skies to bring democracy to the remote corners of the NT.

‘Two parts’: Why early voting matters in the upcoming federal election

It’s on. Voting has started in the Territory to decide who will be representing us in Canberra for the next three years.

Territorians, who have made up their mind, or those unable to attend a polling place on election day can cast their vote for the 2025 federal election from Tuesday at one of hundreds of early voting centres.

With just 10 days before the offical polling day of Saturday May 3 our city streets, and regional communities will be awash with political supporters manning early voting centres across the Territory from Tuesday, April 22 up to and including Friday, May 2.

The electoral commission has taken to the seas and skies to bring democracy to the remote corners of the NT.

Australian Electoral Commission Northern Territory manager Geoff Bloom encouraged people to plan their vote.

“We appreciate many people across the Territory may take full advantage of the public holidays and take some time off and we’re encouraging everyone to start planning their vote,” Mr Bloom said.

“If you can, vote on election day otherwise start thinking about accessing a pre-poll vote service or postal vote.

“If you’re travelling, you can still cast your vote on election day or at a pre-poll voting centre in another town, city or state, you don’t need to vote where you are enrolled.”

All early voting centres will be closed on Anzac Day, April 25.

The largest remote voter service delivery in Australia is also underway from Tuesday in the Territory, with over 30 teams travelling to nearly 200 individual communities.

The number of services has increased since 2022 to assist the Australian Electoral Commission with delivering an in-person polling service to a similar number of people in a 10-day period.

Around 45 vehicles, 6 charter planes and 4 helicopters will be used across the Territory to deliver these opportunities.

“We use 4WDs, helicopters, small planes, boats and ferries to bring electoral services to remote locations across the nation, sometimes to communities with as few as 10 people on the electoral roll,” Mr Bloom said.

“It is not a legislated requirement, but it is a hallmark of Australian elections that the Australian Electoral Commission is very proud of.”
