TERRITORY Senator Sam McMahon has labelled renewable energy a “great hoax” and the “dole bludgers” of the energy sector.
The CLP Senator said made the comments in response to news that construction on Sun Cable’s $20 billion solar project near Tennant Creek would start in 2023.
“Renewables are the dole bludgers of the energy mix,” she said in the Facebook post.
“They are a great hoax perpetrated by the industry on the gullible.
“Yet this Gunner Government thinks it is a great idea to take up huge tracts of productive land, build a solar farm of non-recyclable panels, the size of which the world has never seen, in an area that is totally hostile to solar panel efficiency and run a 4500km extension cord to Singapore.
“If you think that is a good idea, I have a small block of land with awesome views on Jupiter I’m prepared to sell you at a great price!”

Chief Minister Michael Gunner was confused by the Senator’s comments and said Prime Minister Scott Morrison supported the Sun Cable project.
“I’ve asked whether or not the Senator’s page has been hacked, because these comments are from another planet,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Senator McMahon has hit out at the clean energy sector.
Last year, she said renewables were a ‘fanciful idea’ and a ‘fraud’ in her maiden speech to parliament.
Before the Territory election in August the NT News asked the major local parties if they believed that climate change was happening and was caused by human activity.
Senator McMahon’s party, the CLP, responded by saying climate change was real, was caused by human activity, and would negatively affect the lives and businesses of Territorians if action was not taken.
It also said the Country Liberal Party was committed to strong measures to combat climate change, including backing a 50 per cent renewable energy target in the Territory by 2030 and expanding the creation of clean power for the Territory.
