Race for CLP Senate seat begins as high profile potential candidates nominate

OPPOSITION Leader Lia Finocchiaro’s chief of staff Tim Dixon and Alice Springs Deputy Mayor Jacinta Price are among the candidates who have nominated for Senate preselection for the Country Liberal Party.
The Sunday Territorian understands that Mr Dixon will leave his post in Ms Finocchiaro’s office to run for preselection for one of the two Territory Senate seats. Ms Price has also nominated for Senate preselection, the Sunday Territory understands.
Director of defence and veterans engagement at Defence NT Linda Fazldeen confirmed she was also running but declined to comment any further until after the preselection process.
CLP president Jamie de Brenni said he was unaware of who had nominated for preselection and that the party would not be announcing candidates until after the preselection process was complete next month.

Ms Price has been an aspiring federal government representative for a number of years and ran as the CLP candidate for the seat of Lingiari in 2019.
Mr Dixon ran as the CLP candidate for Fong Lim when Dave Tollner retired at the 2016 Territory election but lost to Labor’s Jeff Collins.
Ms Fazldeen has never been a CLP candidate but has a long history of public service to the Northern Territory and was honoured as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for her significant service to women in 2017.
Sam McMahon currently holds one of the Territory’s seats in the Senate for the CLP, with Labor’s Malarndirri McCarthy holding the other.
The CLP candidates will officially be announced on June 23.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison is yet to call a federal election.
