Territory Labor has promised to double the availability of free preschool for four year olds if re-elected in August.
The $35.5m commitment would increase preschool funding from 15 to 30 hours at up to 25 preschools, bringing them in line with primary school hours.
The plan would be delivered in a staged rollout over four years.
Territory Labor said its “Positive Preschool Plan” could save hundreds of families at least $5000 a year by reducing the need for child care.
“These are common sense changes that give Territory kids the very best start in life and deliver early education that works better for families,” Chief Minister Eva Lawler said.
“Doubling the hours of free preschool available to four year olds will help Territory families with the cost of living and make sure Territory kids get the benefits of more early education.”
Education Minister Mark Monaghan said the plan would help ensure Territory kids got the best start in life.
“Early education has the most profound impact on a child’s development and that’s why a re-elected Lawler Labor government will deliver more free preschool hours for more Territory kids,” he said.
The increased free preschool hours would begin in the 2025-26 financial year with 10 sites. By 2027, Labor expected 25 sites across the Territory to be offering 30 hours per week of free preschool each week.
The party said the decision about which preschools would receive the boost would be decided through community consultation, and the rollout developed with local communities.
According to the NT school directory there are currently 59 preschools across the Territory.
