The NT Greens will host a community crime forum on Monday night, encouraging Darwinites to “join us to learn about evidence-based, humane approaches to justice and community safety”.
New South Wales Senator and Greens justice spokesman David Shoebridge is in the Top End for the event, and will be joined on the panel by Justice Not Jails’ Natalie Hunter and Justice Reform Initiative’s Rocket Bretherton.
Local Greens member for Nightcliff Kat McNamara will moderate the panel and community discussion.
“We need a lot more federal politicians coming to the Northern Territory, to listen and learn, and that’s key to my visit,” Senator Shoebridge said.
“Each time I come to the NT there are common calls from communities, especially First Nations communities, for more autonomy, more respect and some serious federal support to make things happen.
“The federal government doesn’t have all the answers, but it can take a constructive role in setting minimum national standards and pushing for a national response to youth justice that is based on evidence, not fear.
“We know what works in this space, community support programs, safe housing, more investment in domestic violence services, not more police, more jails and more division.
“I look forward to getting together with the NT Greens and local communities to build on our national partnership and use that to push federal resources where they are so desperately needed.”
The “Politics in the Pub” event will run from 6pm to 8pm on Monday, at Frilly’s, 21 Cummins St, Rapid Creek.
