THE NT government is calling for expressions of interest for a new enterprise to be established at the site of a popular Top End tourist attraction.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security has today put out a tender seeking EOIs from commercial operators interested in managing the Window on the Wetlands site, located about 70km east of Darwin on one of the highest points of the Adelaide River flood plains.

It comes after the NT government, which formerly ran Window on the Wetlands, closed the facility indefinitely on January 1 this year, citing the building’s age, cost to run and declining visitor numbers as factors for the decision.

According to tender documents, the Window on the Wetlands building includes a two-level visitor centre, a cafe, an interactive display of the area and a viewing deck offering a 270 degree view of the wetlands.

It is situated on 18.5 hectares of land.

Department senior director of commercial and community partnerships Dr Aggie Wegner said the launch of EOIs was an exciting opportunity for a new operator to give visitors a “new and extraordinary experience” at an iconic Top End setting.

“The site offers spectacular views of the Adelaide River flood plains, lightning storms and offers huge potential to service the drive market, organised tours and to provide services to independent travellers,” she said.

“Commercial operation of WOW will expand and enhance the visitor experience in the region and will create jobs and other opportunities for Territorians.

“It is hoped a dynamic operator will stimulate growth in visitation to this incredible attraction and give it a new lease of life.”

Expressions of interest are open until Wednesday, May 5
