THE ballot draw for the upcoming Territory election has happened and there’ll be some disappointed candidates.

One of them would be Chief Minister Michael Gunner, who will be listed last on the ballot in the hotly contested seat of Fannie Bay.

He will be in fifth place after independent Mark MacKenzie, the Greens’ Peter Robertson, the CLP’s Tracey Hayes and Rebecca Jennings from Territory Alliance, following today’s ballot draw for the August 22 poll.

Ms Jennings said she was unfazed about being placed fourth.

“In Fannie Bay, I really think the voters are a lot more politically aware,” she said.

“We’ve got quite high enrolment rates there. Everyone on the doors is very interested in all of the political candidates, and with my how-to-vote cards as well, my voters will be very aware of what they’re putting down. So I’m not that fussed about it.”

In Port Darwin, which is shaping up to be one of the most competitive seats this election, CLP candidate Toby George gained a slight edge in securing first place on the ballot.

His closest rival, Labor’s Paul Kirby, is listed fourth.

“It’s always good having lady luck on my side,” Mr George said.

“I’m not sure how close it’s going to be, but I’ll take everything I can get.

“Some people say that (ballot placement) might be worth about three per cent of the vote.”

In Katherine, a seat expected to return to its conservative roots after a brief foray with Labor, the ballot draw didn’t do much to split the difference between the two major non-Labor parties, with Territory Alliance’s Melanie Usher and the CLP’s Jo Hersey positioned third and fourth.

The ballot draw was conducted over two simultaneous events in Darwin and Alice Springs, with candidates’ positions on the ballot electronically assigned at random.
