September 12: A man whose hunger got the better of him was left without a car in the middle of a fast food run.

Southern Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Thomas Chalk said the man drove to Hungry Jacks Alice Springs between 8.30pm and 9.30pm Wednesday when disaster struck.

Sergeant Chalk said the man was in “a bit of a rush” to pick up his food and left the keys in his vehicle’s ignition.

He said an “opportunistic” person saw the keys in the car and drove away in the vehicle.

Sergeant Chalk said the silver Hyundai Veloster – with SA registration S971BNG – and its occupant had not been sighted since, and he urged anyone with information to contact police on 131 444.

In separate incidents, Sergeant Chalk said police were also investigating a string of overnight burglaries across the Alice Springs suburbs and CBD.

Sergeant Chalk noted Thursday’s RUOK Day initiative was an important opportunity to check in on neighbours, colleagues, family members, and friends.

“Today is a day where we check in on each other,” he said.

“Ensure they’re okay.”
