Police probe after paint vandals strike new Katherine playground
Katherine's new nature playground has been vandalised with allegedly stolen paint, leaving council staff 'devastated' by the damage to their labour of love. Read the details.
A recently installed playground in Katherine has been vandalised, with tubs of allegedly stolen paint left at the scene.
Katherine Town Council on Thursday uploaded images to Facebook showing its new nature playground at Roney Park had been vandalised.
The number “0850”, a reference to Katherine’s postcode, was painted on the park’s welcome sign.
Paintbrushes were left beneath benches, buckets of paint were left on seats and in the sandpit and several signs were daubed in garbled graffiti.
The council said it was “devastated” by the discovery.
It added that it reported the incident to Northern Territory Police.
KTC asked “if anyone is missing cans of paint and has security footage of it leaving their dwelling, or if anyone saw people en route to the park with paint tins, could they please notify the Katherine Police (sic)?
“Our staff are passionate about their jobs, and creating this space was a labour of love for one in particular,” the post said.
A user in the comments said the paint was stolen from their neighbour’s house, and that police were given security camera footage of the incident.
Many users condemned the act.
NT Police said anyone with information should contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number NTP2500100271.
