Large numbers of police officers have “saturated” North-West Queensland as part of a major operation targeting domestic violence and property crime.
Queensland Police Service confirmed on Monday that the Mount Isa district would be saturated with officers as part of the latest phase of the state-wide Operation Whiskey Legion.
Mount Isa District Superintendent Tom Armitt said the operation would focus on domestic violence and property crime.
“This deployment will target the most high-risk offenders in the district,” he said.
“You can expect to see a high visibility police presence with plans to saturate the entire district in the coming days.”
The major multi-level operation will deploy extra police to the Mount Isa District from August 26 to September 4 to drive down crime and take strong action against those causing harm in our communities.
Superintendent Armitt acknowledged Mount Isa posed its own set of policing challenges.
“We are unlike anywhere else the operation has been before, so this operation has been tailor made to suit the specific needs of our district.”
Operation Whiskey Legion will see specialist police from the Highway Patrol, Crime and Intelligence Command, Dog Squad, and Crime Prevention join forces with local police to target high-risk crime in the area.
The extra police resources enable a surge in police presence at hot-spot locations including shopping centres, public community events, and roads.
The community can expect to see high visibility patrols and crime prevention activities to engage with residents about their security.

“We will continue tackling crime from all angles to ensure the community is safe and feels safe,” he said.
“We’ve seen great results in previous deployments to Logan, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Moreton, Mackay, Brisbane, and Wide Bay.”
Since Operation Whiskey Legion began in April, a total of 3,186 people have been arrested on 8,144 charges.
