Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ashley Dudson briefed media on Wednesday afternoon.

“Detectives from the Major Crime Squad have taken into custody a 21-year-old male from Katherine (who) is currently at the Palmerston Watch House and is assisting police with their inquiries.”

The young man was arrested on Wednesday morning after investigations led to police identifying the man.

Mr Dudson said at that time, no charges had been laid.

“At this stage we haven’t determined any charges, we’re still collecting evidence (and) assessing it,” he said.

At the site of where the deceased man was found, an industrial building had a large hole next to the roller door, with a nearby red 4WD bearing significant damage across its windscreen and front.

Mr Dudson confirmed the 4WD was being examined as part of the investigation.

“We are looking at the mechanisms of how that car came to be in this location at the property,” he said.

“We’re getting assistance from the Major Crash Unit in regards to that, along with the forensic pathologist (who) has provided information to us.”

Mr Dudson said two other vehicles, which belonged to the deceased man – an orange quad bike with a small boat – had been hooked on to the 4WD when police arrived on the scene.

“They were connected to the vehicle that was involved in the matter,” he said.

As for when the victim passed away, Mr Dudson said police believed the 46 year-old man may have died as early as Monday evening.

“We believe that (he died) sometime (on Monday) evening, sometime after 8pm,” he said.

He said the deceased man had been a Palmerston resident who had “conducted his employment” at the site where his body was found.

Locals who may have been on the scene on Monday night, or the early hours of Tuesday morning were encouraged to contact police.

“Especially anyone who has any dashcam or footage that might be relevant,” he said.

Asked if further arrests were expected, Mr Dudson said police were keeping their “minds open”.

“At the moment we’re keeping our minds open at this stage – (the 21-year-old) is the only suspect we have in custody so we’ll be dealing with him, but any other information we receive we’ll investigate.”
