PRIME Minister Scott Morrison has never been shy about showcasing his culinary skills, and on New Year’s Eve he pulled out the big guns with barramundi from the Top End.
On Friday afternoon he took to social media to wish Australians a happy new year and announce his menu for the evening.
“BBQ barramundi and a kerala fish curry on the New Year’s Eve menu tonight,” he wrote. “Barramundi from Humpty Doo in the NT, absolutely delicious!”
Humpty Doo Barramundi has emerged as the supplier of the fish, with business owner Dan Richards saying he was rapt to see fresh Territory produced being called out on the national stage.
“It’s something we’re really proud of,” he told ABC Radio.
“It’s a great surprise for the new year.
“We knew they were going to do the cook up, we didn’t know they were going to call it out.”
Mr Richards said he hoped the prime ministerial shout out would put Humpty Doo “on the map”.
He said Mr Morrison’s interest in Top End fish stemmed from a visit to the Territory in 2021.
“Early last year, the Chief Minister gifted some fish to the PM while he was up here,” he said.
“He said (to Chief Minister Michael Gunner): ‘What’s some great produce from up here?’ so he got a box of fish about the middle of last year.
“And then said, ‘Wow, that was great. Can I get another box of that fish?’ I think. I was more than happy to organise it.”
As Mr Morrison faces growing criticism over his management of the pandemic, some Australians were less impressed by his social media post.
“You don’t hold a hose, just a pose,” one user quipped.
“Do you have anything in responding to national issues beyond offering a curry?” asked another.
Others were less scathing of the prime minister flexing his culinary muscles.
“Yum, we had bbq rump steak with bbq’d veges and a Canadian club dry to wash it down,” was the message left by one Facebook user. “Happy new year to you and your family.”
