FOOTY fans watching Sunday’s Palmerston-St Mary’s Premier League game at TIO Stadium will be forgiven for thinking there are two Jayden Daveys and two Alwyn Davey Juniors out on the ground.

The 15-year-old Davey twins will only be separated by the numbers on their back — No.1 for Alwyn Jr and No.2 for Jayden — in their Premier League debuts for Palmerston.

Their dad, Palmerston playing coach and 100-game Essendon small forward Alwyn Sr, will be keeping an eye on his young charges.

Davey Sr made his senior debut at the same age, running on to TIO Stadium in a Magpie team that contained St Kilda star Nicky Winmar.

“It’s pretty special for any young kid to be playing your first senior game and I was the same in RJ’s (Russell Jeffrey’s) side way back then,’’ he said.

“We want to play more juniors this season and develop them for the future. My boys will be around the forward line and pushing up towards the middle.

“I want them to have a bit of fun around the goals and get a feel of the footy.

“Their handball and kicking skills are pretty good, they love to take the game on and they are probably more composed with the footy in their hand than most juniors their age.’’

The Davey twins have another long-term ambition to pursue at the start of their senior careers — emulating their dad by wearing the black and red of Essendon.

“I played 100 games, so yes, they are eligible under the father-son rule,’’ Alwyn Sr said.

“They’ve been playing footy since they were aged nine in Melbourne and now they’ve progressed through the junior sides at their home club, so it’s over to them now.’’
