LITCHFIELD Council will support the naming of a cul-de-sac after a historic local figure.
Litchfield Council supported the cul-de-sac in the subdivision at 200 Trippe Road North, Humpty Doo, being named ‘Nelly’s Place’ after historical figure Helen “Nelly” Skewes.

Litchfield planning and regulatory services manager Wendy Smith said while NT Place Names did not support the use of apostrophes and only supported surnames, Ms Skewes had been an important figure in the council’s past.
“Provided history indicates (Nelly) was an early settler in the Humpty Doo area, building and owning the Humpty Doo Pub and shop on the Stuart Highway before originally subdividing the underlying block that is the subject of the current subdivision,” she said.
“She also served a term as a councillor for the then Litchfield Shire Council.”
And, if that wasn’t enough reason, Nelly also owned famed local pub, the Humpty Doo Hotel.

At the latest meeting, Council also made a decision to allow for naming of places that didn’t follow the criteria, so long as an explanation was provided to the applicant.
