LITCHFIELD Council is looking to fill the void left by last week’s cancellation of the Fred’s Pass Rural Show.

Council will also consider the possibility of hosting some of the show’s key events to ensure they aren’t lost to bigger communities.

Several Fred’s Pass Rural Show committee members resigned last week, just two months out from the show.

With attractions such as the Paddock to Plate and 50k Feast expanding to have national acclaim in recent years, Litchfield Mayor Maree Bredhauer’s proposal to the council says she would hate to see those events taken over by other councils, which could have a severe impact on reinstating the show in 2022 and beyond.

“It would be a significant and non‐reclaimable loss to Litchfield Municipality, the council, business and brand if for example the 50K Feast or Paddock to Plate event concepts were transferred to elsewhere in the Top End, for example hosted in the Darwin Waterfront or as part of the Darwin Show,” she said.

“The cancellation provides an opportunity for Litchfield Council to take a lead role in the planning of an event that will ‘hold the space’ for 2021 for the rural population and more widely the Top End community.”

Ms Bredhauer called upon council chief executive Daniel Fletcher to investigate community event options to substitute the show and to establish what resources and stakeholders council had to work

“As the local council we have a responsibly to support local business and to help to build a connected and engaged community,” she said.

“(Our objective here is) to ensure that Litchfield Municipality … continues to have the opportunity to have a significant and successful community event that promotes/celebrates the rural area in 2021.”

Ms Bredhauer has requested a report be presented to the council’s April meeting.

The Fred’s Pass Rural Show was originally scheduled for May 22 and 23 this year.
