THE changes Charles Darwin University is proposing to make to its Vocational Education and Training and Higher Education sectors should not be taken lightly.

They will reshape the entire institution at a time when education has never been more important.

The university will play a crucial role in the years to come following the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and these changes will begin just before Vice-Chancellor Simon Maddocks steps down.

Three of the NT’s major unions say the university should go into caretaker mode until a new vice-chancellor is recruited — and this is not an unreasonable request.

There is every chance the new vice-chancellor will step in, assess the situation and make their own sweeping changes.

It would be appropriate to let the new leader of the Northern Territory’s only university have a say in what their institution looks like for the next few years.

Perhaps their early suggestions could put CDU on a more prosperous path.

The university’s staff need to think carefully about how they proceed with these changes because mistakes cannot afford to be made.

The education of our future leaders is paramount, and if the Territory hopes to become the comeback capital we need to make sure our students study and live here.
