The main one of which is; give the decision-making power to First Nations Australians themselves.

And yet, governments have still made minimal progress on the basic request.

These are huge, complex problems. But they are not problems without solutions. The government just isn’t asking the right people for advice.

The Close the Gap report by the Lowitja Institute, released yesterday, shows that solutions to these problems lie with passing the power back to those who understand them and experience them first hand – Indigenous Australians themselves.

When COVID-19 swept through Australia, remote Aboriginal communities were some of the most well protected of anyone in the country because of decisive action made by Elders and community leaders.

A report is not worth the paper it’s written on unless the people whose desks it lands on actually read it and commit to implementing what it recommends.
