The expanded Home Improvement Scheme, to be announced on Wednesday as part of a broader package, will be welcomed.

The last scheme was a runaway success with struggling tradies and there have been ongoing calls for the scheme to return.

The beauty of the scheme is that it is not just the Territory Government giving handouts. Those who use the scheme have to commit their own money as well so it increases the size of the spend.

Those who have been wanting to do some home improvements will jump on it.

This time around all Territory homeowners will receive $6000 to undertake renovations and improvements to their property by a local business or tradie.

People will need to put in $2000 to receive the additional $6000 or alternatively they can put in $1000 and receive $4000.

For businesses the $10,000 for upgrades as a part of a new Business Improvement Scheme will help.

So too will the incentive of contributing their own $10,000, that will trigger the government pitching in an additional $10,000 for a total of $30,000.

The Chief Minister’s office won’t rule out acting again to provide more support if it’s needed.

It may have to with the Territory’s international tourist market on hold because of worldwide travel restrictions.
