A LIGHT caught hurtling through the night sky on a dash-camera just south of Darwin has baffled a husband and wife who are quite familiar with the starry skies.
Astro-photographers Paul and Sylvia Mayo were left mystified after they captured the strange phenomenon on the dash camera when they pulled out of a petrol station near Berrimah.
At the time they thought nothing about it but, when Mr Mayo was going back through his computer files, he stumbled across the bizarre light going at an astonishing speed parallel to the horizon through the night sky.
“We’re switched on people, we have long careers in IT,” Mr Mayo said
“But this video, I cannot explain it.
“I’m baffled, and I’m not usually baffled by anything.
“In my 30 years of taking photos of galaxies and star clusters, you might see the odd jet but this is, to me, probably moving a lot faster.”
The dash-cam video, taken on June 12, 2015 at 1am, shows Mr Mayo’s vehicle pulling out of a petrol station.
Out of nowhere a light flies past from the left at an amazing speed.
Mr Mayo took stills from the video and zoomed in and increased the contrast of the light.
The results are spectacular.
“It looked like a string of coloured pearls shooting through the sky,” Mr Mayo said.
He considered the light could be a reflection from the windscreen, but dismissed the theory because it was moving too fast and there were other reflections shown on the camera.
“That thing in the video is going along the tree tops in a straight line,” he said.
“And shooting stars curve through the sky.’
Mr Mayo said he welcomed anyone who could provide him with an explanation as to what the strange light was.
