Five boys have been arrested after a string of stolen car offences in Darwin overnight, with one stolen ute and its tray-full of offenders still at large after ramming a police car and throwing projectiles at four more.
NT Police allege at 8.50pm Wednesday, reports were made about males allegedly trying to steal a white Toyota LandCruiser in the staff car park at Darwin Airport.
The vehicle rammed the gates of the car park and leaving the premises.
About 10.40pm, a Jingili resident saw a group allegedly attempting to steal their white LandCruiser.
They confronted the group, who fled the scene in the car.
The car was seen on Vanderlin Drive, where officers attempted to stop it.
A pursuit began through the northern suburbs and returned to Vanderlin Drive where the car was successfully spiked.
The occupants drove into bushland and fled on foot.
The Dog Operations Unit successfully arrested four males aged 13, 15, 18 and 20.
At the time of writing, police said the group remained in custody.
At the same time, police said two more LandCruisers were stolen in the greater Darwin region – one from a shopping centre on Roystonea Avenue and the other from an address on Casuarina Drive.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested in Johnston in one of the stolen cars.
A further six alleged offenders fled the area before the police arrived.
About 5.20am, a Toyota HiLux was stolen from a unit complex in Coolalinga.
The HiLux was seen travelling south on the Stuart Highway with a group of boys in the tray.
During the search a Dog Operations Unit vehicle was rammed by the stolen HiLux.
Four more police vehicles were damaged the occupants allegedly threw projectiles at police before completely their escape.
The officers were not injured.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dale Motter-Barnard blasted the alleged offenders.
“The actions of these individuals are despicable,” he said.
“The officers in the vehicle that was rammed were thankfully unharmed, but the outcome could have been very different.”
Sergeant Motter-Barnard said the boys had put road users’ safety at risk.
