Shane Bracken was the first member of his family to finish school and is now set to achieve another milestone – completing a trade.
Thanks to a Northern Territory-based program, the dream can become reality.
The program, led by PowerWater, ensures 11 new apprentices and seven NT government graduates across Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek will start new career journeys across a variety of roles.
The apprentices will commence their four-year nationally accredited apprenticeship program through training provider GTNT Group to learn specialised skills in electrical, cable jointing and linework fields.
Starting his apprenticeship as a linesman, Mr Bracken said the program was a significant opportunity for his family.
“No one in my family has finished school let alone completed a trade certificate, so it’s something I really want to achieve and make my family proud,” he said.
Ethan McKay finished year 12 two years ago and said he was eager to start his cable jointing apprenticeship.
“I’ve always had an interest in car electrics and understanding how the mechanics work, and that’s why I applied for an apprenticeship to start my career in the electrical industry,” he said.
“I am really looking forward to the opportunity to meet new people, develop my skills and challenge myself to become a fully qualified cable jointer.”
As for the graduate program, members will undertake a two-year placement across a range of business areas, including water services, power services, core operations and people and culture.
Bachelor of Commerce graduate Vera Chen said she was thrilled to learn she would be joining the people and culture division.
“What excites me the most about working here is how much my own values align with those of Power and Water,” Ms Chen said.
“The commitment of putting people first – both customers and employees – and the cultures of excellence, teamwork and making a difference is something I want to be a part of.
“Even in my short time here, I’ve felt a shared passion and a clear sense of direction, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the journey and witnessing our collective progress and outcomes.”
Power and Water chief executive Djuna Pollard said the initiative could positively change Territorian lives.
“It’s great that we can provide employment opportunities through GTNT and be a part of developing local capability and expertise for the future,” she said.
“I am passionate about what we do and the essential services we provide across the Territory, including employment opportunities, to help make a difference to the lives of Territorians.”
