Even during times of heartache, Emma Rowe can still see the positive side.
The local singer-songwriter has always believed that music helps her conceptualise emotions and problems on a deeper level, rather than simply thinking about it.
But this outlook wasn’t something that came to her immediately.
“When I was younger, the feelings I was writing about were a lot more surface level; I didn’t really know how to dig deep,” Rowe said.
“I was in my moody teen years … I had a lot of big feelings and thoughts.
“Whereas nowadays I would say writing for me is a bit more conceptual in the way that I feel like I often dig deeper than I intend and it all comes together in my brain – I find the missing piece to how I’m really feeling.”
Rowe has recently dropped her newest single, Love Song, which was made in collaboration with her new band, which, as of now, is called the “Emma Rowe Band”.
“It’s a song I wrote after a pretty big heartbreak … maybe two or three months ago,” she said.
“I wrote it sort of as a ‘new beginning’ kind of thing, like closing one door and opening another.
“I wanted to emphasise healthy love in all its forms; the kind of love that lifts and enlightens, that makes you a better you and is built on a foundation of respect and trust.”
Rowe, who has taken much inspiration from Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins in her music career, said she was open to all suggestions for a renaming of her band.
“We can’t think of anything better,” she said.
“At every gig I say ‘If anyone can think of anything better, please tell us’, because for a bunch of creatives we just can’t find one.”
Nonetheless, whether it be an imaginative or realistic band name, Rowe hopes she and her band can continue to perform together.
“We all just really clicked,” she said.
“It was just a happy accident that we all happened to click and gel together.”
