A Top End man is in custody after he allegedly tried to run down two people, rammed a vehicle, assaulted men with a baseball bat and rocks, and chased a woman with a weapon.

NT Police allege the man, 42, began his spree at Winnellie shops at 4.30pm Tuesday.

They allege the man assaulted another man with a baseball bat, before trying to run over two more people in the carpark while driving a white Suzuki Vitara.

It is further alleged the man threw rocks at a fourth person at the same location.

Police allege the man left the scene and drove “erratically” along Bagot Rd while “threatening drivers with an umbrella”.

At 4.50pm the man allegedly rammed another car at the intersection of Bagot and McMillans Rds.

He drove to the Vanderlin Drive service road – near the Lee Point roundabout – and mounted the grass verge before stopping.

There, police said he got out of the car, armed with an edged weapon, and chased a woman.

Police apprehended the man when he sat down on the ground at 5.10pm.

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a mental health assessment.
