Dramatic change in overnight crime, police say
Police in the Top End have had a reprieve from a repeated night of serious incidents that hit at the weekend.
NT Police on Monday said the week started on a “very good night” after an alleged crime spree over the weekend.
Northern Watch Commander Greg Lamb said police were investigating an unlawful entry in Coconut Grove.
He said the alleged “intruders” entered the property at 3am on Monday.
Mr Lamb said it was not clear if anything had been stolen, and no arrests had been made as of 6am.
He said there was also a “very minor” crash at McDonald’s in Ludmilla.
“No one was injured,” Mr Lamb said.
“No roads are blocked.”
Horrific crash leads to minor injuries, ongoing investigation
The worst injury from a horrific collision on a major arterial road was a cut on one driver’s arm, police have confirmed.
NT Police Commander Daniel Bacon said one of the cars was a Toyota Kluger allegedly stolen from a Puma service station.
He said a 39-year-old man forcibly entered the vehicle.
“It was hijacked from a family that was parked at the service station,” Mr Bacon said.
“The vehicle was later involved in a collision on Tiger Brennan Drive.”
He said the 29-year-old driver of the other vehicle sustained a laceration on his arm and the alleged offender “ran away, but he was later apprehended”.
The outbound lanes of Tiger Brennan Dr remain closed.
Mr Bacon said police continued to investigate a spate of break-ins in the Top End between 10.30pm Saturday and 5am Sunday.
“We’ve had about five unlawful entries and one attempted unlawful entry throughout the Palmerston and rural area,” he said.
“There were three stolen motor vehicles involved in that series of offending as well.”
There were two break-ins and an attempted unlawful entry at three service stations, a break-in at a licensed premise, and two more break-ins at businesses in Palmerston.
Mr Bacon said the night’s events were a display of “disgusting and selfish behaviour”.
Mr Bacon said one of the targeted services stations was Shell in Coolalinga.
Coolalinga Shell site manager Sherrie Dattinger said it was the first time the store had been targeted.
Ms Dattinger said a group of children arrived at the site and used a brick and a trolley to smash the shop doors and a window.
She said she went to the service station shortly after she heard about the break-in at 3.40am.
Ms Dattinger said she had lost “a lot” of business throughout the day while the glass was replaced.
“We can’t trade if we’re not secure,” she said.
“It’s not a quick fix.”
Palmerston Cash Converters was also unlawfully entered, with some of the store windows smashed, overhead lights left dangling from the ceiling, and shattered glass littering the ground.
Employees – who could be seen guarding the front entrance in the absence of a door – could not say what had been stolen.
They were waiting throughout the morning for the store’s entrance to be boarded up.
