A teenage boy accused of taking part in a bloody carpark brawl that took the life of an older man will remain behind bars.
Jerad Gurruwiwi appeared before the Darwin Local Court for the first time on Thursday charged with recklessly endangering serious harm, unlawfully cause serious harm and aggravated assault.
After reading the alleged facts, Judge Richard Wallace told the 18-year-old he doubted the indictment would remain at the relatively lower scale of charges given the violent allegations surrounding the fatal brawl.
“It’s hard to believe the charges your facing at the moment will be the final charges,” Mr Wallace said.
Gurruwiwi was arrested on Wednesday morning after the bloodied body of a 39-year-old man was found in the carpark of the Rapid Creek Business Village the night before.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.30pm Tuesday, where they declared the man dead.
A crime scene was established, with the incident classed as a suspicious death.
It will be alleged the 18-year-old was among a group of up to four people involved in the fatal assault.
It is understood there were up to 20 potential witnesses to the alleged assault.
Police said the investigation was ongoing, with door-knocks continuing while officers continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
The teenager was silent behind the security glass, as his lawyer Joseph Bourke made no application for bail.
Mr Wallace said the teen’s charges would have to go to a committal proceeding, with the likelihood Gurruwiwi would end up before the Supreme Court.
He adjourned the matter for a preliminary examination mention on Wednesday, May 3.
Gurruwiwi will remain remanded in custody.
