Territorians aged 55 and over will be the target of a campaign to recruit workers to the aged care sector, as part of the Territory Government’s efforts to fill workforce shortages.

The government has awarded Crest NT $140,000 to attract more than 85 new staff to the sector.

The funds will also help Crest NT roll out a targeted marketing campaign, that will also aim to attract mature workers across the border, as well as create a mature aged workers administrative platform for job matching and deliver support for employers.

The project forms part of the government’s Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said the fund was designed to help the Territory reach a $40bn economy by 2030.

“Aged care is a vital sector to our community, and this grant will go a long way in attracting more workers to support the sector and our senior Territorians,” Ms Fyles said.

“This is just one of many ways we are boosting our workforce and ensuring we have a strong pipeline of workers for the future.”

Crest NT workforce coordinator Renee Barratt said the project would skill new workers to the industry and grant existing workers the opportunity to train others.

“We’ll be looking certificate three in individual support and also any certificate fours in aged care,” Ms Barrett said.

“We’ll also be looking at the training and assessment sector as well so moving people who already work in the industry into the vocational education training sector.

“There’s a lot of programs trying to get that 55+ market out there and also to show employers how good that market is in the workplace.

“They’re not yet ready to be retired to the shelf.”

Crest NT will now identify which aged care providers need the extra workers.

Over 20 applications, spanning industries including agriculture, hospitality and aged care, are currently being assessed for similar grants under the government’s $12.8m Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund.
