The Lawler government is offering Territory businesses lucrative grants worth up to $20,000 for investing in equipment or technology that improves recycling.
On Wednesday, the government announced the Sustainable Business Solutions grant program had a funding pool of $500,000 available to incentivise businesses in adapting green friendly alternatives in waste disposal.
Environment, Climate Change and Water Security Minister Kate Worden said waste management improvements would enhance the Territory’s economy.
“Investing in efficient waste management systems reduces the negative impact on the environment and helps cut costs and increase efficiency,” she said.
“The Sustainable Business Solutions provides an opportunity to reduce waste in the Territory, save Territory businesses money, and lay the foundation for an efficient and modern recycling industry in the Territory.”
Eligible equipment or technology includes those that avoid or prevent waste being generated on site or reuses waste on site and facilitates recycling, such as cardboard perforators, commercial worm farms or food waste monitoring equipment.
Ms Worden said the announcement was in line with the government’s ambition to become a $40 billion economy in the coming years.
“(Our government) will continue to invest in programs that promote a circulate economy as we continue to develop our economy to $40 billion by 2030.”
Waste Recycling Industry NT Mark Sweet welcomed the announcement and said it would help businesses to “embrace circulate economy practices”.
“The Waste and Recycling Industry Association NT is a strong advocate for government investment in initiatives that support the Territory community to reduce waste to landfill and recover, re-use and re-purpose valuable recyclable materials,” he said.
“Grants such as (this) provide significant support for businesses to embrace circular economy practices, including source separation of recyclables, reducing contamination, on-site re-use of recovered materials and ultimately saving money and promoting local job creation through new investment opportunities.”
Businesses interested in applying for the grant are required to undertake a waste assessment using the Bin Trim App, which provides a customised plan for the business, including recommendations in what relevant equipment or technology should be purchased.
Applications close on June 30, 2025 or as soon as funding if fully allocated.
