Bin raids are on the rise in the Top End and one new local has learned the hard way why staying on top of your garbage is essential.
James, 23, recently moved from Adelaide to Darwin and said he was “shocked” at how nosy the local birdlife was.
“When I moved here everyone was saying I should brace myself for the crime and house invasions,” he said.
“But instead it’s the birds that shocked me; they’ve really f--ked my s--t up.”
James said he had to win back the faith of his new neighbourhood.
“It’s pretty embarrassing because I’m the new kid on the block, you know, and now the whole street thinks I’m super grubby,” James said.
“Lesson learnt, it’s my fault.”
James is not the only resident to have his rubbish plundered, with several photographs emerging of corellas feasting across properties in the Palmerston area.
The pillaging follows revelations in November that cockatoos were stealing the lunches of primary school children in Nhulunbuy, which one teacher described as “a lost battle”.
“I think it’s a lost battle, it’s not just the school that they attack,” schoolteacher Kaylie Thompson said.
“I regularly come home and my garbage bin contents are all over the grounds because they have lifted up the lid and got inside.”
