Aaron John Thomas, 33, of Avoca, Queensland, is charged with carrying out a sexual act with another without consent, taking a person with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, sexually touching another person without consent, entering a building with the intent to commit a serious indictable offence and kidnapping with the intention of committing a serious indictable offence.
He did not enter pleas in Gosford Local Court on Thursday, however police made a detention application to place Thomas in custody.
Thomas, who grew up in Wagga Wagga and spent most of his life in Bundaberg, was in Wyoming in November when the alleged offences are set to have occurred.
Police prosecutors said they had an “overwhelming strong case” which included DNA matches to samples obtained from the two alleged incidents, as well as CCTV footage capturing Thomas’ alleged behaviour.
In the first incident, which is alleged to have occurred shortly after midnight, a 17-year-old girl was studying when she heard a bang.
She went to investigate and saw a male allegedly masturbating and told her parents.
In the second incident, a French national was outside making phone calls to her family at about 2am.
In the CCTV footage which was played to the court, the screams of a woman could be heard.
Police allege “CCTV captures the behaviour of the defendant where he is hunting the victim following the second complainant, hiding behind a bush.
“The offence has taken place where the accused runs after the second complaint in the middle of the road and sexually touches both her breasts and her vagina area.”
The court heard cell tower data was able to place Thomas at the location of the alleged offending, and that when he was arrested he allegedly made partial admissions.
Police allege Thompson then remained “sexually charged and motivated until the second offence took place” which showed he lacked control and was sexually motivated to commit the offences.
Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis said Thomas posed an unacceptable risk and was a danger to the community, and placed him in custody.
Thomas will appear in court at a later date.
