Tyalgum Rd at Eungella: Man arrested after one shot dead, two others injured
A man has been charged with murder after a bushland arrest near the Queensland border. It comes after a chaotic chain of events in which two men were shot, and one was hit by a car.
A property dispute has resulted in a man being charged with murder after a chaotic chain of events in a small town near the Queensland border left one man shot dead, another wounded, and a third allegedly struck by a ute.
Emergency services were called to a property on Tyalgum Rd, Eungella – about 10km west of Murwillumbah – around 1.25pm on Wednesday after reports two men, aged 41 and 38, had been shot.
Police say a 45-year-old produced a firearm and shot the two men after a property dispute.
It’s alleged 36-year-old Mark Brown was also involved in the incident before fleeing the property.
Paramedics treated the 41-year-old at the entrance to the property, but he could not be saved and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.
A short time later, officers were called to a second incident on the same stretch of road, where the 45-year-old alleged gunman was allegedly hit by a ute.
The man was treated by intensive care paramedics for leg, chest and arm injuries. He remains under police guard in hospital and will be questioned by officers.
The surviving shooting victim, 38, later presented to Muwillimbah hospital suffering a gunshot wound, before being transferred to Gold Coast University.
Detectives from Tweed/Byron Police District – assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad – established Strike Force Bray to investigate, setting up multiple crime scenes across the rural area.
More than five hours after the initial shooting, the Dog Squad located and arrested Mark Brown in bushland off Tumbulgum Rd about 6.40pm.
He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and later charged with murder. He was refused bail and faced bail court via audiovisual link from custody on Thursday morning.
Counsel for the accused told the court he would not be making an application for bail, with bail therefore refused.
A brief has to be served by February 13 and he will appear before Tweed Heads Local Court again on February 17.
Northern Region Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said officers arrived to a “very chaotic scene.”
