Sylvania locals recount alleged road-rage attack

A group of teenagers are in police custody and one remains in hospital after an alleged road-rage attack in southern Sydney ended in a dramatic showdown on a quiet dead-end street.

Police were called to the Princes Highway at 1.25am on Saturday near Sylvania after reports a boy had been allegedly assaulted after a ute and bike collided.

Police discovered a damaged ute parked on nearby Venetia Street with a damaged trail bike in the tray.

A short time later, a 17-year-old boy presented to St George Hospital with serious injuries.

Four people from the ute, three men aged 18 and another 17-year-old boy, were taken to Sutherland Police Station where they remain in custody on Saturday morning.

No charges have been laid at this time, however, inquiries are continuing by detectives into the alleged assault.

Residents living around the usually quiet cul-de-sac were kept up for hours on Saturday morning as sirens, spotlights and police cars swarmed the street.

Mendo Trajcevski, 63, said he heard men “screaming and yelling” at about 2am after the group had pulled off the highway, before he saw someone from the ute push the trail bike down the road.

At first, Mr Trajcevski thought the commotion was a group of friends causing trouble.

“There were people screaming over near the highway and there was a bike getting pushed down the street, and people yelling at each other, I thought they were probably mates,” he said.

“I saw coppers going down the highway and next thing you know, a ute drove down the street and the coppers got him in the dead end.

“After that it was chaos from about 3am with more and more cop cars, it was so loud and the lights were flashing non-stop, I’m sure (the other residents) couldn’t sleep through it.”

Mr Trajcevski said he saw the group of boys sitting in the gutter being questioned by police before they were taken to the station and their ute was towed away.

Fellow Venetia St residents Abbie Norris and Oscar Norris, 21, were woken up by the commotion in the early hours of the morning.

Ms Norris said the first thing her sister heard was a “man running up and down the street screaming ‘shut the f*** up’” shortly before 2am.

While Kim and Breton Kemp had a front-row seat to the incident as it unfolded right outside their house.

Ms Kemp suspected the group tried to make an escape from the police and by the time they realised they had driven into a dead end cul-de-sac, it was too late.

“This is such a quiet street, I think they obviously made the wrong choice coming down here because there’s no way for them to get out,” she said.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for anyone with dashcam vision of a crash on the Princes Highway, shortly before 1.25am on Saturday, involving two utes, a 2015 grey Volkswagen Amarok ute and white Toyota Hilux ute, and a trail bike.
