A man is fighting for life and a critical incident has been declared after a police siege triggered a stand-off that lasted more than four hours at a home in St Marys overnight.
The incident began when officers attended a home on Adams Crescent shortly after 3pm on Wednesday, to locate a man wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, refused to leave the home which prompted the launch of a police operation involving specialist officers, including negotiators.
After several hours of negotiations, officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad entered the home around 8.20pm and found the man with self-inflicted injuries.
A Taser was deployed during the arrest, and the man was taken to Westmead Hospital by paramedics.
He remains in a critical condition under police guard.
A critical incident team from Riverstone Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances of the incident, with the probe to be independently reviewed as per standard procedure.
