New South Wales to implement average speed cameras for cars and trucks

Startling figures have revealed the huge number of fines dished out to lead-footed motorists speeding through school zones, with cameras raking in a staggering $23m in fines in just six months.

A total of 71,040 drivers – or an average of almost 400 a day – were caught hurtling through 40km/h school in the six months from July to December with some drivers copping fines as high as $3141.

The total value of fines cost motorists $23.2m over the six months with the state’s most lucrative school zone camera responsible for dishing out $1.4m in fines.

Government revenue data shows the set of fixed speed school zone cameras on Victoria Rd in Ryde had the most fines issued with 4486.

The cameras – near Holy Cross College Ryde and St Charles & The Sacred Heart of God’s Catholic Primary School – generated $1.43m in revenue for the NSW Government.

The second most lucrative set of cameras was the fixed school zone cameras on the Princes Highway at Kogarah which nabbed 4294 motorists.

The cameras are near multiple schools including St Patrick’s Primary School, Bethany College, James Cook Boys’ High School, Moorefield Girls’ High School and Kogarah Public School.

In Sydney’s west, drivers on Woodville Rd near Old Guildford Public School were issued 3977 fines.

Rounding out the top five list was the set of fixed cameras on Lane Cove Rd in North Ryde near North Ryde Public School followed by the fixed cameras at The Boulevarde in Strathfield near schools including Santa Sabina College.

Of the total fines issued, 59,595 fines for drivers were caught travelling 10km/h or less over the 40km/h school zone limit.

A total of 10,836 drivers were nabbed travelling between 10 and 19km over the limit and 614 drivers were detected at 20-29km/h above the limit.

There were also 54 motorists caught driving 30-39kmh over the speed limit and three motorists who received the maximum penalty of driving more than 45km/h over the limit, each copping fines of more than $3141 each.

The figures come as the state government issued a plea for drivers to slow down in school zones after two school aged pedestrians were seriously injured in active school zones in 2024.

“Speeding, even just a couple of kilometres over the limit, could be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all and in a school zone,” Transport for NSW executive director of transport safety Chadi Chalhoub said.

“I urge parents, guardians and all drivers to be patient and slow down around schools to ensure children remain safe on their journeys to and from school “

School zone speed limits came back in force across most of NSW on Friday as students prepare to start Term 1 after the summer holidays.

In NSW there are currently 45 sets of fixed speed cameras located in school zones.
