Police are refusing to rest on their laurels after a Byron Bay sex attack more than two years ago, with a renewed appeal aiming to track down witnesses and catch the culprit.

Police are refusing to rest on their laurels after a sexual assault in tourism haven Byron Bay more than two years ago, with a renewed appeal aiming to see the offender caught.

On Friday, NSW Police issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to come forward after the attack on August 6, 2022.

Shortly after midnight, a woman was assaulted near the intersection of Lateen Lane and Byron Bay’s main drag, Johnson St, police state.

Police were told a group of men came to the aid of the woman.

No one has been charged more than two years on, despite Tweed-Byron Police District detectives carrying out extensive inquiries.

A police spokesman said detectives wanted to speak to the men who helped the victim.

CCTV footage released by police on Friday shows several people walking along Lawson St in the moments leading up to the assault.

There is no suggestion these people, nor the men who came to the woman’s aid, were involved in the assault; however, police believe they may have evidence crucial to the investigation.

The vision depicts the following men.

• A man with a white long-sleeved shirt with motif on back, dark jeans and white shoes.

• A man with an off-white long-sleeved jumper, dark jeans, white shoes and a bone coloured cap on backwards.

• A man with a beanie, yellow and grey shirt, dark long pants and grey shoes. He was depicted holding a cardboard box.

• A man with a black cap on back to front, dark jacket with white lining, blue jeans and red shoes.

• A man with long brown hair, cream long sleeve jacket, white shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes.

• A man with a dark jacket, dark shirt with motif across chest, dark pants and brown shoes.

Police urged anyone who may have been in the area at the time and who has relevant information to phone Tweed/Byron Police, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
