The boyfriend of a young woman killed in a boat crash suffered horrific injuries to his face and has not been able to speak about the tragic accident.

Kobi Bennett, 19, was driving in a separate boat when he and girlfriend Kassandra ‘Kaysy’ Muhr, 20, collided in the dark near Elvina Bay in Pittwater, on Sunday night.

Ms Muhr tragically died soon after the two five-metre runabouts crashed, despite the valiant efforts of paramedics and bystanders to save her life.

Mr Bennett was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he underwent surgery on Monday for a serious injury to his mouth.

Friends of Mr Bennett told The Daily Telegraph he is not able to speak yet because of the injury and surgery, but he has been told Ms Muhr didn’t survive the crash.

“It’s messed up, all of it... he’s a great guy and none of us can believe it happened,” a friend said.

NSW Police Marine Area Command boss Chief Superintendent Murray Reynolds said detectives were still piecing together the moments leading up to the crash.

“Detectives are there today, canvassing and trying to identify any potential witnesses,” Chief Superintendent Reynolds said.

“The vessels have been forensically examined by specialist vehicle examiners, which is all part of the investigation.”

Friends of Ms Muhr have created an online fundraiser to help her family come from Germany to Sydney.

“We really want to go to Australia, but the costs of this journey are very high,” her mother Romana Muhr said.

A lover of adventure and the outdoors, Ms Muhr only planned to be in Australia for a quick holiday before heading home to Germany.

But the 20-year-old never left, after falling in love with the ‘place and the people’, and deciding to make it her home.

Tragically, Ms Muhr’s dream came to an end on Sunday night when she was killed in the crash near Pittwater.

From her home in Germany, a devastated Romana Muhr said she took comfort knowing her daughter died ‘happy’ and doing what she loved.

“She left her soul in Australia, a place she truly loved,” Mrs Muhr said.

Ms Muhr arrived in Australia three years ago, and promised she would return home to her parents and two sisters.

“I wasn’t really happy about Kaysy staying in Australia, but she was really happy and she found good friends,” Mrs Muhr said.

“She always told us to visit her so that she can show us why she fell in love with Australia.”

Ms Muhr had settled on Scotland Island where she did part-time work at a local business, while dabbling on the side in her real love – renovating a boat.

“Ahoy my fellow pirates. I figured as a girl with a huge passion for boats and the ocean as well as fixing things it might be fun to follow the rebuild on my 28ft yacht ‘Eric’,” she posted on a social media account.

“As I have zero experience in boat building, this is gonna be a challenge I’m super keen on.”

NSW Police have begun an investigation into how the boats collided in the dark, around 7pm.

Locals said the ‘pink sunset’ and the unseasonably warm winter’s day on Sunday had lured more people than normal onto the water, and it was possible the pair was just out enjoying the evening before the accident happened.

In a chilling Instagram post made just a week ago, Ms Muhr said she was in the process of installing lights on her boat.

“For what it’s worth. After actually never having any, I figured it was about time to invest in some navigation lights without the risk of getting caught every night,” she wrote.

“There’s still more wiring to do but at least they’re in.”

Witnesses have described the harrowing scene after the crash and the distressing screams for help.

Sydney to Hobart veteran Paddy Broughton, who lives close by, was called by neighbours who had heard “an awful crash and a cry for help”.

He jumped in his own tinnie and raced to the scene where he said other neighbours had already arrived to help.

“One went with the young fella and another jumped into the (boat) with the young lady,” he said.

Water police towed both boats from the scene early yesterday for forensic examination as part of their investigation.
