Olympic champion Jess Fox has recovered from a rare off day to win a World Cup C1 crown and a sport ‘trophy’ that takes the cake - or cheese at least - in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain

Penrith paddler Fox was not her usual self in the kayak on day one, failing to qualify for the final, but showed her class to bounce back and bag the C1 gold medal on Sunday despite a gate touch.

The Olympic and world champion clocked 98.42 - more than four seconds faster than Spain’s silver medallist Miren Lazkano.

Jessica Fox proudly showed one of the fruits of her efforts post race on social media with the champion posing with a giant wheel of cheese.

“It was not a good day in kayak yesterday so it is special to bounce back and put down some good paddling,’’ Fox said after her win.

“The heats races are always tough, you know, to piece it all together, and do enough to get into the final, which I did.

“So I’m pleased with that and to then race the way I did in the final felt good.

Unusual prizes and trophies for winning sporting events are not uncommon in the world of sport.

Cyclists have been known to win cows and mounds of bananas at races with the winner of the famous Paris-Roubaix awarded a mounted cobblestone from the course.

The winner of the local women’s derby between the Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets get a piece of highway guard rail mounted as a trophy,

Sydney to Melbourne ultra-marathon: Cliff Young famously won a gold-plated gum boot for winning the 1983 race and winners of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway in the US have been known to win a giant grandfather clock.
